How timezones work
Understand how Weqly decides which timezone to show your shift and leave times in.
Weqly is built for teams spread across cities, regions, and countries. To keep everyone’s schedule readable, it follows one simple rule: times are stored once, then shown to you in your own timezone. This page explains how that works and how to fix times that look off.
The two timezone settings
There are exactly two places a timezone is set:
- Your personal timezone, in Settings → Timezone (see Account settings). This is optional, and turned off by default.
- The workspace timezone, set by an admin in Workspaces → Edit Workspace. Every workspace has one.
Both use the same searchable picker. Start typing a city or region (for example Berlin, New York, or Tokyo) and pick the match: you no longer have to scroll the whole list.
Setting your personal timezone
By default your account has no personal timezone, so you follow the workspace. To set your own:
- Open Settings from your profile menu.
- Go to the Timezone section.
- Turn on Custom timezone.
- Search for and select your timezone.
- Save.
Set this if you work remotely, travel, or simply sit in a different timezone than the rest of your workspace. Once set, your schedule always reads correctly for you, wherever you log in.
Setting the workspace timezone
Admins choose the workspace timezone when creating a workspace, and can change it later:
- Click your profile picture → Workspaces.
- Click the three dots next to the workspace → Edit Workspace.
- Update the Timezone field.
- Click Save Changes.
This is the timezone everyone falls back to when they haven’t set a personal one. Pick the timezone of your main location or head office.
Why times are always stored in UTC
Behind the scenes, Weqly stores every shift and leave time in UTC, a single, neutral reference timezone that never shifts for daylight saving. Nothing is stored in “New York time” or “Berlin time”.
When a time is shown to you, Weqly converts that UTC value into whichever timezone applies to you (see below). This is what lets a manager in London and an employee in Los Angeles look at the exact same shift and each see it at the right local hour. Daylight-saving changes are handled automatically during this conversion.
One important consequence: Weqly never uses your browser’s or device’s timezone. If your times look wrong after you travel or change computers, it’s not the device. Check your timezone settings here instead.
Which timezone you actually see
Weqly resolves your effective timezone with a strict priority order. It uses the first one that is set:
- Your personal timezone (Settings → Timezone), if you’ve set one.
- Otherwise, the workspace timezone (Edit Workspace).
- Otherwise, UTC as a final fallback.
In practice: a personal timezone always wins for you individually. If you leave it off, you inherit the workspace timezone. UTC only appears if, unusually, no timezone is configured at all.
So if your shift times look off by a few hours, work down the list: first check your personal timezone, then confirm the workspace timezone with your admin.
